A Morning Prayer

June 3, 2015 — Leave a comment

Today is my 35th birthday! Wow.

There are many thoughts I have with each passing birthday. Some about how fast time flies. Some about the number of grey hairs I’ve acquired as of late. Mostly about the number of blessings I daily find myself surrounded by.

Some will inevitable ask, “do you feel older”, “do you feel different”, “do you feel wiser”. My reply is this.

I feel thankful. I feel expectant.

One of the things I hope to do more of here at jonowens.tv is music reviews. I love music and I love sharing good music with others. I plan on sharing a pretty diverse spread of musical treats because this of course is the raw blend and diversity is the spice of life! I am super stoked to focus this music review on my brother and friend John Lumpkin II.

For John Lumpkin “devotion” is not just an album title, it is a way of life.

There are certain things in life that should not be touched.

Especially by nobody other than your spouse. Yes, you may have to “adjust” it from time to time, but then again…you really shouldn’t be playing around with it anyway.

Some like to refer to it as their “secret place”, but whatever you like to call it, it must be protected. I’m talking about your “private” times with Jesus.

Of course..

So much time and money is spent on us presenting ourselves well publicly. This isn’t necesarrily a bad thing. It just is what it is. It’s a good thing to shower, wear deoderant, and brush your teeth!

As an old man with little regard for being politcally correct once said, “if the barn needs painting…paint it” (that is of course unless you’re not going for the whole make-up thing…but whatever…do you boo boo)!

The bottom line is this, we daily invest time, energy, and cost into being publicly presentable while we often neglect, cancel, and even avoid spending time with God, who is the “Sustainer of Life”.

Our souls may be a hot mess, but we look FABULOUS!

I love going places! I love visiting new cities, meeting new people, and I particularly enjoy experiencing new restaurants!

That’s almost exactly the order of my questioning when I’m going to speak, teach, or lead worship at an event. “Tell me about your city. Tell me about your people. Where are we going to eat? BAMM! LET’S GO!”

Anywho, as much as I like to go places, I’m not a huge fan of the travel, and I HATE DELAYS!

When I first started traveling, just the packing itself would drive me crazy. I’ve had my share of missing or misplaced bags, so I try to avoid checking a bag if I can. However, trying to decided what to pack on a three day trip when I’m only taking a carry-on can almost require a word of prophecy. I would start recalling lessons from my mom about making sure I always have plenty of clean underwear. Then I’m making sure my shower gell and toothpaste tubes meet the proper size requirements as to not alert the TSA agents.

Oh yes, the TSA agents! Continue Reading…

3SecretsToChange

I don’t care how old you are, how young you are, how extroverted you are, or how introverted you are; everyone wants to know that what they do in life matters. Inside every one of us is a deep sense that we were made to make a difference on this planet.

We want to make an impact. We want to make a change.

In my experience as a child, I remember hearing these ideas all the time from Disney movies to after school specials that I could make a difference. Michael Jackson was telling us all, we needed to “make that change”. The movie “The Sandlot” (one of the greatest movies of all time) lit a fire into many a kid that they could be a “legend”! However, a few years later I would find myself working in a hot distribution plant, placing labels on boxes, and boxes on a conveyor belt, and thinking, “this wasn’t exactly what I had in mind”. This job certainly didn’t feel legendary and my warehouse manager didn’t look anything like Wendy Peffercorn!

I began to understand during that time in my life that “making a change” may look a little different in “real life”. Continue Reading…

WHY “THE RISE”?

20140130-150853.jpgWhat’s good?! We are so thrilled to see how many amazing people have backed our worship project!!! A couple weeks ago we got to introduce one of the new songs from “The Fall” EP at church and the response was incredible! We are convinced more than ever that God is going to use these songs in an amazing way!

As we move closer to our KICKSTARTER deadline I wanted to communicate more of the vision and expectation behind “The Rise” & “The Fall”. The video below offers a look into part 1 of the 2 EP project, “The Rise”.

Please check it out and join us in making this project a reality!

CH LA 2013

Three years ago, when I started writing the song “We Cry Holy”, I was deeply moved by the “call of Isaiah” found in Isaiah 6:1-8. This amazing encounter with God forever changed Isaiah in person and purpose. I wanted to write a song that would cause people to be in awe of a Holy King, be changed by a redeeming Savior, and be commissioned by the Risen Lord.

I had written the chorus, verse 1, and a bridge at first. It worked and definitely had some cool moments, but I did not feel like it was complete. After I would play it, Kelley and I would often look at each other and think, “it’s not quite finished”. Continue Reading…
