Here are some of my thoughts shared on Twitter this morning. I thought it would be easier to post them together and I’ve expanded on some of the ideas.
I too mourn for the Martin family and desire justice. Having lost a daughter of my own, I understand that the pain of losing a child is like no other pain in this world. Immediately after singing a painful chorus of “WHYYYYY”, the next question is often “WHOSE FAULT is it and WHY are THEY still BREATHING”? “Justice” is the cry…a deep painfully numbing cry.
I pray that the truth is fully revealed about the Trayvon Martin case and that “justice” is served, but the outcry is about far more than a mother losing her son. Whether someone is charged or not, gapings holes of unforgiveness, bitterness, mistrust, and anger have been exposed for all to see.
So I ask, where is the “Rev” that will rally a people for RADICAL forgiveness & reconciliation?
It’s easy to talk forgiveness when a bunch of celebs write a theme song, make a Facebook cause that you can “like”, and change your twit pic. However, forgiving others who hate you NOW, not just in the past…forgiving people who you have every human reason & excuse to hate right back…forgiving people who defiled you without permission and harmed you without apology…that’s the forgiveness Christ modeled. That’s the forgiveness that brings “change” in the world.
That’s the kind of stuff that messes with people’s heads because they realize they don’t have it in them to muster up. You can’t “like” enough causes or change your twitter pic background enough to attain that kind of forgiveness. It only comes from hearts that have been transformed by Christ and recognize how much they have been forgiven.
As we come upon Passion Week, and meditate on the life, death, and resurrection of Christ, I dare my Christian fam to model forgiveness, humility, and reconciliation harder than any article of clothing.
Rock you hoodie, but TAKE UP THE CROSS!!!
